Unpacking Boxes in Fullerton

So the past couple of weeks, my hubby and I have been in moving mode. Last week we packed our whole lives into boxes. In these boxes were memories from our childhood, our college days and our first few years of marriage. Our journey together of finding a home was hard and if you would of asked my five years ago if I would ever buy a house in Orange County, I would of told you heck no.

Let me rewind a little and tell you our journey. For seven years I lived in an adorable house tucked in the hills of Silverlake. This part of Los Angeles is seriously cool and so much of it really defined everything I loved. My first year of marriage to John was spent going to lots of great restaurants, gallery hopping and walking the plethora of stairs that wined their way through the hipster laden hillsides. It was AWESOME.

But God had a different plan. When I moved to Silverlake, back in the day, it was sort of ghetto. My rent was crazy cheap and I was under glorious rent control. Our landlady who used to be a good friend, so good, she went to my wedding, turned psycho. One day she went to an open house down the street and noticed that they were charging rent twice as much as what she was charging us. Very quickly, she tried everything in her power to make our lives a living hell, so we would want to move. Working with lawyers became exhausting and after realizing that we didn’t want to loose any more sleep over our adorable house in the hills, we knew our time with that place was over.

It only made sense to move to Whittier, which is where I have worked for the past 9 years. My husband had just graduated from USC and was looking for adjunct teaching positions, which he easily found at BIOLA and Chapman. It didn’t make sense for both of us to commute, so we moved to suburbia. Whittier was convenient, but the only good thing about our apartment, ironically enough was our awesome landlord. We found ourselves hanging out in Fullerton ALL THE TIME and so much of this adorable section of Orange County reminded me of the urban qualities of Silverlake, minus the traffic and metered parking.

Fullerton is AWESOME! We have made so many good friends here and truly feel like we have a community. We had 23 people help us move for goodness sakes! Our church in located in Fullerton, which is so fun, because we are only 5 minutes away. The Fullerton Loop is an incredible set of running trails that I can’t wait to get moving on. There is a plethora of cool places to eat, socialize and look at cool art. And we can actually afford a home in this part of Southern California. Woot! Woot!

And because every post should have a picture, here is an image from our old place. I will be posting some pics of the new place, once we get a bit more settled.
